The 70% Split

Signing up for gym and working up a sweat isn’t the be all and end all of your weight loss mission.  The most common question that I am asked is what my secret to weight loss success is.  What magic pill did I take to drop the kgs?  Want my secret?  Keep reading.

Yes, I totally just click-baited you into carrying on reading, but if you weren’t at a crossroads about your health, you wouldn’t be here, right? The secret to a successful weight loss program isn’t in how many supplements you take, or how many time a week you train – it’s the 70% that everyone forgets about.  It’s what goes on in the kitchen.

Stop me if you have heard this one before, you are on a new path of healthy living with spinning classes and carrot sticks coming out of your ears.  You are so proud of your first hour as a #cleaneater that you have already discovered what Insta-filter makes carrots look amaze.  But you are starving and you just drove past Burger King and you’re pretty sure that you saw someone post about how Burger King is really good for you anyway.  You write it off as a once off cheat that you can totally burn off at the gym later.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but that burger is now part of your soul.

Here is the thing though, we can all Instagram the crap out of our “healthy food” with every hashtag under the Instauniverse, and then toss it aside the second cake is offered to you.

I’m not brownie bias though…

You can’t out exercise a bad diet.

The 70/30 split is there for a reason, because you need to nourish your body with healthy food.  Not because gym goers feel like torturing people with steamed broccoli in the canteen (sorry Candies) and the stench of protein farts at 4 in the morning (don’t let anyone tell you this doesn’t happen).

What you eat in private shows up in public, and no amount of crunches are going to stop that from happening.  So, the next time you’re tempted to shovel down something unhealthy because your gym sessions aren’t paying off, don’t.  I am all for a scheduled cheat meal of the carb heavy yumminess that we ALL crave, but don’t let a cheat meal become a cheat life.  You’re just setting yourself back.

Because I like you all (and I hope you like me enough to share me with your friends), I’ve prepared a little grocery list for you.  Here are healthy foods that you can create delicious meals with if you just use a bit of creativity.  You’ll YouTube kittens for 6-hours, spend 30 minutes looking for recipes.

And remember, 6 to 8 glasses of water a day!  Keep yourselves hydrated!
